Punjab CM Mann targets opposition, wants second change in 2027
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Thursday appealed to voters to give the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) another mandate in the 2027 state elections, citing his government's development record and criticizing rival political parties.
Speaking at a public outreach event at Gandhi Chowk in Phagwara, Mann highlighted his government's achievements and said Punjab's voters had largely turned away from the Shiromani Akali Dal.
The opposition is attacking Mann on the issue of a controversial video. Mann, however, had already refuted the allegations.
"The people of Punjab have already reduced the Akali Dal to a 'vacant party,' and any remaining misconceptions will be cleared in the next elections," Mann said, taking aim at Akali leaders Sukhbir Singh Badal and Bikram Singh Majithia.
Mann also criticized the Congress party, describing it as a political force in decline. He compared its condition to that of an elderly person in the final stages of life, saying the party was now "asking for water while sitting on a cot."
The chief minister accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of relying on central investigative agencies for political leverage.
Highlighting infrastructure improvements, Mann said his government had significantly expanded the state's canal irrigation network. According to him, only 22 per cent of canals were operational before AAP took office, compared with 78 per cent now. He added that the figure could rise to 90 per cent within the next 10 days.
Commenting on reports of renewed cooperation between the Akali Dal and the BJP, Mann said the two parties would weaken themselves through internal conflicts.
