Punjab to get GI tag for famous Amritsari Kulcha
Punjab’s Food Processing Department has called a key meeting on June 19 to advance efforts to obtain a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for the Amritsari Kulcha, a popular traditional flatbread closely associated with the city of Amritsar.
The move is aimed at protecting the dish’s authenticity and safeguarding the interests of local businesses.
A GI tag, granted under India’s Geographical Indications of Goods Act, 1999, provides legal recognition and protection to products whose unique qualities are linked to a specific geographic region.
What is GI tag
GI (Geographical Indication) tag is a certification mark applied to food and agricultural products that originate from a specific region and possess qualities, characteristics, or a reputation strictly tied to that location. It functions as a specialized form of intellectual property.
