After years of controversy and release delays, Punjabi actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh's film Satluj, formerly titled Punjab 95, has premiered on the streaming platform ZEE5.

Directed by Honey Trehan and produced by RSVP and MacGuffin Pictures, the film is based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, who disappeared in 1995 after exposing alleged illegal killings in Punjab. The cast also includes Arjun Rampal, Kanwaljit Singh, Suvinder Vicky and Geetika Vidya Ohlyan.

Dosanjh said Khalra's sacrifice and commitment to humanity inspired him to take on the role, describing the film as one of the most meaningful projects of his career.

Trehan said the filmmakers aimed to tell the story with honesty and sensitivity, adding that audiences can now finally see the result of years of work.

The film underwent multiple title changes before its release. Originally named Ghallughara, it was later retitled Punjab 95 after India's censor board approved it with 21 cuts. Following legal challenges and delays, including the cancellation of its planned 2023 Toronto International Film Festival premiere, the film has now been released under the title Satluj.

The release time kept extending due to demand by the Censor Board of Film Certification- The regulatory body which clears the content. 

The film revolves around social worker Jaswant Singh Khalra's life whose expose of illegal killings in Punjab stirred a controversy and the matter reached to India's highest court- The Supreme Court of India.
