Punjab Congress rift widens, Channi, his supporters give ultimatum to high command
Dissident leaders of the Punjab Congress have given the party's central leadership one week to address their concerns following a strategy meeting convened by former Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi at his residence in Morinda town.
After several hours of discussions, the leaders said the high command should resolve issues raised by party leaders and workers within a week. The meeting also decided to form a committee led by Channi to present their grievances to the party leadership.
Participants authorized Channi to determine the group's future course of action. Channi did not speak publicly before or after the meeting.
The outcome suggests the dissident faction is seeking dialogue with the party leadership rather than pursuing an open revolt at this stage.
The party high command recently made changes in the party's state unit but did not change the President Amrinder Singh Raja Warring. The dissident leaders are demanding to replace Warring.
Channi, who remained the Chief Minister for around three months following the unceremonious exit of Captain Amrinder Singh. In 2022, Congress suffered a big defeat winning only 18 seats in the state assembly.
in 2024, however, the party regained some lost ground during the Lok Sabha elections and managed to win 7 seats out of the 13 in the state under Warring's leadership.
However, some senior leaders opined that the win was due to the failure of AAP government in Punjab on many fronts and not because of Warring's leadership.
