Mann video controversy: SGPC to convene Panthic gathering on July 5
In what could be said as an effort of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), will convene a 'Panthic gathering' on July 5 at Gurdwara Manji Sahib Diwan Hall in the Golden Temple complex. The meeting is intended to unite Sikh organizations behind a directive issued by the Akal Takht in connection with the controversial video case involving Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann.
The meeting will bring together Sikh organizations, Nihang groups, religious societies and prominent Sikh personalities to discuss the implementation of the Akal Takht's decision and formulate a collective response, according to SGPC officials.
The Akal Takht Sahib had earlier declared Mann "guru dokhi" (one who has offended the Guru) and "Panth virodhi" (opposed to the Sikh Panth) over the video controversy. It also called on members of the Sikh community not to support the chief minister.
The SGPC has also passed resolutions through its executive committee and general house calling on the chief minister to resign and appealing to the Sikh community to withdraw its support for him.
According to the SGPC, invitations have been sent to more than 100 Sikh organizations across Punjab and beyond. SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has personally met leaders of several prominent organizations to invite them to the gathering.
The chief minister has rejected criticism surrounding the Akal Takht's decision and has continued holding public meetings and gatherings across the state.
The developments come as the Punjab government is also facing political pressure over the proposed Jagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Amendment Act.
