BJP wins West Bengal, Tamil Nadu sees surprise in India
The results of five state assembly elections in India were declared Monday. The BJP won the hotly contested elections in West Bengal (WB) while Tamil Nadu sees a surprise in the state where the first timer Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) had won 107 seats out of the total 234.
In WB, where the elections were contested bitterly between the BJP and Trinamool Congress (TMC), BJP won 206 seats out of 294. WB's Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee lost from her stronghold Bhabanipur.
It was one of the most hotly contested elections in the state where the ruling party alleged misuse of official machinery by the BJP and also pointed questions at the Election Commission of India (ECI). The allegations were, however, refuted by the ECI.
In Tamil Nadu, the ruling DMK lost and the TVK which was contesting the elections for the first time won 107 out of 234 seats.
TVK Chief actor-turned politician Vijay surprised every political expert and managed to win the maximum seats in the state.
In Assam BJP retained the power and won 82 seats out of total 126 seats. The main opponent Congress managed to win only 19 seats. The state also saw a bitterly contested elections where the migration from Bangladesh was one of the biggest issues.
In Keralam, the state which has the highest literacy rate in India, Congress managed to win after 10 years. Out of the total 140 seats, Congress managed to win 63 seats while the CPI (M)- the party which ruled the state for 10 years, managed to win only 26 seats. Congress is all set to form the government in the state.
In the Union Territory of Puducherry, out of the total 30 seats, AINRC managed to win 13 seats, BJP 4 and Congress 1.
