Indian medical student missing in Russia found dead
A 22-year-old Indian medical student named Ajit Singh Chaudhary, who was missing in Russia since October 19, has been found dead. The body was found at a dam near White River in Ufa.
Chaudhary, originally from Kaphanwada village in Lakshmangarh in Rajasthan's Alwar, joined Bashkir State Medical University for an MBBS course in 2023. On October 19, he left his hostel around 11am to buy milk and never returned. Later, local authorities reportedly found his clothes and phone nearby as well as his shoes, which pointed to something bad happening to him.
India’s embassy is liaising with Russian officials on autopsy formalities and repatriation. The case, now under investigation, comes amid periodic safety concerns for Indian students abroad—ranging from accidents to mental-health crises and, occasionally, crime. There have also been multiple reports of Indians being drafted into the Russian military and deployed on the Ukrainian front, with two of them dying in action.
