Polling set for West Bengal and Tamil Nadu as Indian state elections enter key phase
Millions of voters are set to head to the polls in India’s West Bengal and Tamil Nadu states as assembly elections move into a critical phase, officials said.
Voting for the first phase in West Bengal will cover 152 seats across 16 districts, alongside polling for all 234 seats in Tamil Nadu, according to the Election Commission of India.
Campaigning for the first phase in West Bengal ended Monday, with a total of 2,920 candidates contesting the state’s 294 assembly seats. A second phase of voting in West Bengal, covering 142 seats, is scheduled for April 29.
Results for both states are expected on May 4.
In West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her Trinamool Congress are seeking a fourth consecutive term in office.
In Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister M. K. Stalin and his Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam are aiming for a second consecutive term.
Election officials said more than 360 million voters are eligible to cast ballots in the first phase in West Bengal, including approximately 184 million men and 175 million women voters.
The Election Commission has deployed 2,450 companies of central paramilitary forces to ensure security during the voting process.
In Tamil Nadu, more than 573 million registered voters are expected to decide the fate of 4,023 candidates across 75,064 polling stations. Officials said nearly 14.6 million voters will be casting ballots for the first time in the state.
The main opposition in Tamil Nadu, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, is contesting in alliance with partners across multiple constituencies.
