Former MLA Jassi Khangura Convicted in 18-Year-Old Assault Case
A court in Ludhiana has convicted former MLA Jasbir Singh Jassi Khangura and his associate Gurpreet Singh in an 18-year-old assault case linked to the 2008 Block Samiti and Zila Parishad elections.
The court of Additional Sessions Judge Barinder Singh Romana, sentenced both convicts to two years of imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹3,000 each. However, the court upheld the acquittal of 11 other individuals who had been named in the case. After the sentencing, both Khangura and Gurpreet Singh were released on bail.
The case was originally registered on May 12, 2008, at Dehlon Police Station. The complainant, Fakir Singh, who was serving as the presiding officer during the elections, alleged that he was attacked while transporting sealed ballot boxes after the polling process had concluded.
Earlier, in 2017, a lower court had acquitted all the accused in the case. However, following an appeal filed by the complainant, the sessions court re-examined the matter and ultimately found Khangura and Gurpreet Singh guilty.
