Surrey is welcoming more than 9,000 athletes to eight sports tournaments this spring, ranging from high-level gymnastics to soccer to badminton. Collectively, these events are expected to generate nearly 2,000 hotel nights in the city between April 1 and June 30, and early projections suggest an injection of $8 million into the local economy. Among the events is the Artistic and Trampoline GymBC Championships, taking place this weekend at the North Surrey Sport & Ice Complex.
“I’m thrilled to kick off the spring sports season at this fantastic venue with some of the top athletes in British Columbia,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “Surrey’s investments in facilities like the North Surrey Sport & Ice Complex, and our support for events like the GymBC Championships, have made the city one of Canada’s premier sports tourism destinations. “Visitors come for the sports and stay to enjoy our restaurants, shops, and businesses, generating a significant economic return.”
Since 2015, Surrey’s Sport Tourism Grant Program has attracted events to the city by helping to offset costs for sports organizations. In 2025, the City provided grants for a record-high 45 events, generating an estimated $31,652,286 in economic impact.
“The GymBC Championships are one of the highlights of our provincial calendar,” said GymBC CEO Jennifer Keith. “This weekend is about celebrating our athletes, coaches, judges and clubs, and the incredible work being done to grow gymnastics in B.C. We are grateful to the city and everyone who makes this event possible, and we are thrilled to welcome competitors and fans to Surrey.”
Approximately 1,000 athletes are participating in the gymnastics event, which runs from April 10-12.
