Prime Minister Mark Carney extended greetings to Sikh communities in Canada and around the world Tuesday, marking Vaisakhi and recognizing its religious and cultural significance.
In a statement, Carney highlighted the historical roots of the celebration, noting that more than 300 years ago, Guru Gobind Singh established the Khalsa, a foundational moment in Sikhism centred on shared identity and values such as justice, service, and charity.
The prime minister said the occasion is both a time for prayer and reflection for millions of Sikhs, as well as an opportunity to reaffirm those core principles.
He also acknowledged Vaisakhi’s agricultural significance as a traditional spring harvest celebration, describing it as a time to give thanks for the results of hard work and perseverance.
Carney noted that April is recognized as Sikh Heritage Month in Canada, calling it an opportunity for Canadians to celebrate the contributions of Sikh communities to the country’s social, cultural, and economic fabric.
He said Sikh Canadians have played an important role in building the country through entrepreneurship, achievement, and acts of service.
Carney concluded his message by wishing those celebrating a happy Vaisakhi.
