UP government constitutes SIT to probe Lucknow fire incident
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered a special investigation into a deadly fire that tore through a three-storey commercial building in Lucknow’s Aliganj area, killing 15 people, most of them students.
The state government has formed a two-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to determine the cause of Monday’s blaze and examine possible safety lapses. Four officials have been suspended over alleged negligence.
The fire broke out in a building housing an animation training centre and a pet clinic. Authorities said several students were attending classes on the second floor when the fire erupted, trapping victims inside. Seven people were injured, while six hospitalized victims have since been discharged.
Firefighters used 14 fire engines and a hydraulic platform to battle the blaze and rescue those trapped. Witnesses said some people jumped from the building to escape the flames.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and announced compensation of 200,000 rupees (about C$3,200) for the families of those killed and 50,000 rupees (about C$800) for the injured.
The SIT has been directed to submit its report within seven days.
