Long weekend excessive speed leads to record impounds on Sea to Sky Highway

A record haul of excessive speeders over the long weekend on the Sea to Sky Highway (Highway 99) shows that there is still much work to be done to get BC motorists to drive more safely.

As part of the month-long High Risk Driving Campaign in May, the BC Highway Patrol unit in Squamish set up in multiple locations between Lions Bay and Mt. Currie over the Victoria Day long weekend. Between May 15 and May 18  the small police unit issued 212 violation tickets and 66 excessive speed tickets (including vehicle impounds).

“At one moment in time, we had four high-end Porsches and two motorcycles lined up waiting to be towed to the impound lot,” says Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol. “We want our highways to be a beautiful and safe drive for everyone, and we’re going to keep removing excessive speeders until people get the message.”

The busiest day for speeding was Sunday, May 17, when 33 vehicles were impounded.

“Even though we warned of ‘police ahead’ using highway signs, there were numerous drivers who were more than 80 over the limit,” says Corporal McLaughlin. “That sort of excessive speeding is exactly what we commonly see at fatal highway collisions, and it’s not acceptable.”

The previous long weekend record for excessive speeding impounds on Highway 99 was from Labour Day 2025 when 60 vehicles were impounded.
