The acting head of Sikhism’s highest temporal seat- Akal Takht Sahib has reiterated a complete ban on practicing yoga within gurdwara premises, declaring the practice contrary to Sikh principles and traditions.

Addressing devotees during a religious march, Akal Takht Acting Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj stated that yoga classes inside complex grounds — including community kitchens (langar halls) — constitute a violation of Sikh tenets. He urged gurudwara management committees to remain vigilant and promote Gatka, the traditional Sikh martial art, instead.

The ruling follows complaints submitted to the Akal Takht Sahib after a video surfaced online showing a yoga session held inside a gurdwara’s langar hall as part of a government initiative. Gargaj clarified that while individuals may practice yoga in their personal spaces, it will not be permitted inside Sikh places of worship under any circumstances.
