Local Gateway at Risk: Surrey Business Board Urges Pivot to India

The Surrey & White Rock Board of Trade is calling on local businesses to review their supply chains and explore new export markets following a U.S. decision to impose a new 50 per cent tariff on a broad range of Canadian goods.

The new measures are scheduled to take effect August 19,  targeting products covered under the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) due to concerns over Canadian trade policies in sectors such as automobiles, alcohol, and dairy. Several key exports — including steel, aluminum, autos, energy, potash, critical minerals, and fish — will remain exempt.

The announcement comes five months after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled earlier emergency tariffs unlawful. Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed trade talks with Washington will now be intensified.

"Businesses thrive on certainty and predictability," said Joslyn Young, CEO of the Surrey & White Rock Board of Trade, emphasizing that the region’s role as a major trade and logistics gateway makes local companies particularly vulnerable.

The board is encouraging regional businesses to diversify beyond the American market, noting it will support members through outbound trade initiatives, including an upcoming trade mission to India.
