Pitt Meadows RCMP reminds public of e-dirt bikes not permitted on public roads

The Pitt Meadows RCMP is reminding the public that e-dirt bikes and mini motorcycles are not permitted for use on public roads, sidewalks, or other designated streetways unless they meet all legal requirements for on-road vehicles.

Dirt bikes or mini motorcycles are to be used only for recreational use on trails, private property, or approved off-road areas. These off-road vehicles typically lack required safety features such as headlights, brake lights, turn signals, mirrors, proper tires, registration and insurance, which are mandatory for road use under provincial motor vehicle legislation.

“We have received a number of reports of youth driving dirt bikes, e-dirt bikes and mini motorcycles on our roadways here in Pitt Meadows,” says Staff Sergeant Michelle Luca, Pitt Meadows RCMP Detachment Commander. “The use of these vehicles on the road is extremely dangerous and illegal, as they’re not built for streets. By taking your dirt bike for a drive on the road you’re putting yourself and others in danger.”

On April 25, 2026, frontline officers spotted a motorized minibike in the area of Airport Way and Harris Road in Pitt Meadows. After stopping the bike, officers noted that the driver, a youth, had already been warned by police twice. As a result, the youth was issued multiple tickets under the Motor Vehicle Act, including Fail to Stop for Police, No Insurance, and No Driver’s Licence.

“To parents and guardians in our community, please be cautious when purchasing this style of vehicle for your children,” continues S/Sgt. Luca. “These vehicles are not legally allowed to be driven on our roads, and our officers are taking a strong educational approach to this issue, however where necessary, enforcement will be conducted.”

If you are found riding an e-dirt bike, mini motorcycle (or other vehicle that does not meet the requirements for an on-road vehicle), on a public road, you could be subject to BC Motor Vehicle Act (MVA) offences and fines:

  • No insurance: $598
  • No license: $276 and three demerit points
  • Riding a motorcycle without a required helmet: $138 and two demerit points
  • Driving without due care and attention: $368 and six demerit points
  • Driving without consideration: $196 and six demerit points
