Shri Akal Takht Sahib Jathedaar wants certain provisions of new legislation removed

The acting jathedar of  Shri Akal Takht Sahib Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj gave 15-day ultimatum to Punjab government to remove of what he described as 'objectionable provisions' from the Jagat Jyot Shri Guru Granth Sahib Amendment Act, 2026.

In a letter, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj raised concerns over several clauses in the legislation and warned about their potential impact on the Sikh community.

The letter said the provisions have created fear and uncertainty among Sikh devotees, granthis, paathi singhs and other religious functionaries. It urged the Punjab government to immediately remove the disputed sections from the law.

Among the provisions objected to are clauses related to the role of “custodians,” the use of the term “saroop” in place of “beerh' ,” and requirements regarding the public disclosure of details after the installation or prakash of Guru Granth Sahib saroops.

The development follows an earlier meeting at the Akal Takht secretariat where Speaker Sandhwan was called to discuss the concerns surrounding the legislation. According to the letter, Sikh religious authorities had already informed the Speaker about the disputed provisions during that meeting.
