SGPC chief asks Akal Takht for direction over SIT probe into 328 missing Guru Granth Sahib saroops
The head of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has written to the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib seeking guidance over whether the Sikh body should continue cooperating with a police special investigation team probing the case related to 328 “missing” saroops of Shri Guru Granth Sahib.
SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami said the committee had earlier cooperated with the Special Investigation Team (SIT) following directions issued by the Akal Takht Sahib, the highest temporal seat of Sikhs, and had provided all information sought by investigators.
In his letter, Dhami alleged the SIT is now seeking “unnecessary” information unrelated to the investigation into the 328 sacred saroops.
According to the SGPC chief, the investigation team has sought details of all SGPC bank accounts, balance sheets, financial transactions and matters related to Gurbani broadcasting.
Dhami said such information has no connection with the probe into the missing saroops and described the SIT’s actions as direct interference in the affairs of a Sikh institution.
He said the SGPC had already complied with previous directions from the Akal Takht Sahib and extended full cooperation to the investigation team.
The letter asks the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib to issue fresh directions clarifying whether the SGPC should continue cooperating with the SIT in the same manner going forward.
