Island’s Largest Pickleball Hub Opens at Topaz Park

A new pickleball hub has opened at Topaz Park, representing a significant step forward in the City of Victoria’s continued investment in park improvements and outdoor recreation.

The new pickleball hub has 11 dedicated courts with permanent nets, fencing, a shade structure and lighting for evening play. Designed with input from the Victoria Regional Pickleball Association, the hub helps to meet the growing demand for accessible outdoor recreation in the region.

“We’re tremendously excited to see this facility open,” said Roger Graves, president of the Victoria Regional Pickleball Association. “It’s a fantastic addition for our growing community of players.”

The City currently offers 10 other pickleball courts across Beacon Hill Park, Central Park, Oaklands Park and Barnard Park. The new pickleball hub supports the City’s Strategic Plan goal of improving recreational sports amenities and promoting healthy, active living.

“It’s great to see these new courts open at Topaz Park, creating more opportunities for people to get active, connect with one another and enjoy our beautiful outdoor spaces,” said Derrick Newman, director of Parks and Recreation. "This hub responds to the growing popularity of pickleball and reflects our commitment to healthy living and accessible recreation for all ages and abilities.”

Topaz Park upgrades go beyond pickleball. New features include improved pathways through the park, an updated outdoor fitness area and a youth-focused gathering space with bike racks, a misting station for hot days and accessible seating. The youth gathering area was designed with input from the City of Victoria Youth Council and offers a safe and welcoming public space for kids, teens and tweens to socialize, relax and develop their independence.

By investing in both recreational and social space, the City is creating a vibrant and inclusive park that supports active play, social connection and community wellbeing.
