Missing snowmobiler found dead
A missing snowmobiler in Haines Pass was found deceased, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) had said.
On the evening of May 8th, Atlin RCMP were notified by the Haines Junction RCMP of a missing snowmobiler in Haines Pass who failed to meet up with his party.
Three snowmobilers had set out to retrieve a broken down snowmachine from the area in northwestern BC, along the Yukon border when one of the individuals got separated from his group.
Due to treacherous winter conditions and zero visibility rescue efforts had been limited.
On the morning of May 10th, a break in the weather allowed a helicopter and snowmobile group to finally access the area where the missing snowmobiler was thought to be.
At approximately 2 pm, the snowmobile group located the missing individual approximately 4km from his last known location.
Sadly, the missing individual was located deceased.
The investigation is now a matter for the BC Coroner’s Service.
The Atlin RCMP would like to thank Haines Junction RCMP, M Division RCMP, Yukon Emergency Medical Response team, and Capital Helicopters for their assistance and commitment to this operation, and Yukon Highways for the use of their facilities at Blanchard River highway camp.
The RCMP would also like to say a special thanks to for the assistance of the snowmobile group, consisting of family and friends of the snowmobiler, and extend our condolences.
