Surrey turns into gangland, eighth murder reported this year
Surrey, one of the fastest growing cities in the lower mainland has turned out to be a gangland where murders have become a routine and businessmen are living in the fear of extortion. With another murder on Tuesday at 148 Street 68 A Avenue, the toll reaches eight this year.
Soon after the incident on Tuesday, CCTV footage went viral showing a car chasing the other and then two men coming out of the car and shooting the victim. One person was fatally shot while the other was admitted to the hospital.
Harjeet Singh Gill, a senior broadcaster at Sher-e-Punjab Radio says that he never saw this kind of surge in crime in the city in the past. He adds that the most frightening thing is the gunmen are shooting at their will and then leaving the crime scenes without any fear of the law.
“The murders have become a routine, everyday we hear that the gunshots are fired at this place, at business and now the wave of murders is underway,” H S Gill added.
According to the Surrey police this year 102 files were reported regarding extortion and 14 incidents of extortion related shootings were reported in the city till April 27.
January sees a maximum number of 10 shooting incidents and 44 files related to extortions.
The Surrey Police Service (SPS) were yet to identify the victim who seems to be a young man and of South Asian origin.
On April 25, shots were fired from two different cars near Surrey Central area but nobody was reported to be injured.
The recent spate of murders in Surrey indicate the gangs involved in drug related business are fighting a turf war. However, the SPS did not reveal whether the murder and the firing incident on April 25 related to each other or not.
