Canada and Italy to deepen ties in defense sector

Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Monday  met with Antonio Tajani, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy, during her visit to Rome, Italy.

Minister Anand and Minister Tajani reviewed progress on the implementation of the Italy-Canada Roadmap for Enhanced Cooperation. They welcomed the growing commercial ties between Canada and Italy and opportunities to strengthen partnerships in defence and security and to capitalize on Canada’s inclusion in the EU’s Security Action for Europe initiative.

The ministers took stock of recent high-level discussions and business delegations promoting new collaborations on energy and critical minerals and increased trade and investment opportunities. Minister Anand noted in this regard the significant benefits that the Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement brings to Canada and Italy.

Minister Anand reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to working with Italy on shared international priorities, including supporting Ukraine and continued coordination to support a sustainable peace in Gaza, and the ministers exchanged views on respective foreign policies on the Arctic.
