Yellowknife: Wildfires in the Northwest Territories are creeping up and menacing the capital city, with evacuees from other communities in the territory still arriving in Alberta.

The territorial government said in its latest fire update that the blaze had advanced slightly overnight and was within 16 kilometres of Yellowknife.

Residents in three western Yellowknife neighbourhoods were put on evacuation notice while other areas across the city continue to deal with heavy smoke and falling ash.

Evacuation orders remain in place for the communities of Fort Smith, Enterprise, Jean Marie River and Hay River. — Canadian Press
