Hamilton: Police are investigating the accident that occurred on ATV in a rural area of Hamilton. Two children died in the accident and their father was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The 35-year-old Hamilton man was travelling in an ATV with his eight-year-old daughter and six-year-old son when the vehicle suddenly plunged into a pond 10 metres deep on the west side of Miles Road, police said.

Hamilton Police said the man managed to get out of the water and then came out and asked for help.

A team of police officials, firefighters and paramedics pulled the children out of the water and sent them to a hospital, but they died despite trying to save them.

Staff Sergeant Paul Corrigan said in an interview that so far police have not been able to find out why the ATV fell into the pond.

The possibility of the man driving under the influence of alcohol has also been ruled out and said that mental health supports are being offered to first responders, who are “very traumatized.”
