Chandigarh: Amritpal Singh, the head of Waris Punjab De, has been on the run for the last 29 days. The Punjab Police has declared him a fugitive.
In a latest development, Joga Singh, an associate of Khalistani supporter Amritpal Singh, has been arrested by the Punjab Police. Punjab DIG Border Range Narinder Bhargava said on Saturday that Joga Singh, a key aide of ‘Waris Punjab Day’ chief Amritpal Singh, has been arrested from Sirhind.
Earlier, two persons were also arrested in Punjab for allegedly giving shelter to Amritpal Singh. The arrested persons were identified as Rajdeep Singh, a resident of Babak village in Hoshiarpur district, and Sarabjit Singh, a resident of Jalandhar district, the officials said. Rajdeep Singh and Sarabjit Singh were produced before a magistrate on Friday night, who remanded them to one-day police custody.
Apart from this, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has also detained a lawyer from Kapurthala. The action was taken after the lawyer posted a post related to Amritpal on social media. The lawyer has been identified as Rajdeep Singh of Hoshiarpur.
It was speculated that Amritpal Singh may surrender in Talwandi Sabo on the occasion of Baisakhi, but he did not come. Intensifying the search for Amritpal, the police have put up his posters at many public places including Amritsar, Gurdaspur in Punjab.
According to police sources, Amritpal Singh was financially helped by two of his associates in Hoshiarpur. Amritpal Singh was given Rs 90,000 by two persons so that he could find a safe place for himself while police was hunting for him.
It has also been found that this amount had reached them from abroad. After getting information and investigation, the police have arrested both of them from Hoshiarpur. The police have also recovered two pistols from them.
The interrogation is still going on and police have not disclosed further details in this case.
