Washington — US President Donald Trump announced that from 4 March 2019, after pausing the tariffs for some time, 25% tariffs would be slapped on most Canadian imports directly. He emphasized that the currently running fentanyl problem needs the stoppage of trade with the US. While there have been several defense and security efforts on the part of the Canadian government to ensure border security against fentanyl, data shows that the rate of seizures made by border enforcement agencies has been plummeting. In less than 1 hour, most officials from Washington carried briefcases or presented their reports showing stops of PWMs and illegal migration. But the diversion that Trump needs is tariffs to thwart the entry of the drug because, though built, any progress in Canada is patchwork at best.
