Ottawa: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the government will tighten rules on hiring low-wage temporary foreign workers. Starting September 26, employers in regions with an unemployment rate of 6% or higher won’t be able to hire these workers. The limit on hiring temporary foreign workers will be reduced to 10% of a company’s workforce, down from 20%, and the work term will be cut from two years to one. These changes mostly return the program to pre-pandemic rules. Trudeau emphasized that while the rules were relaxed to help during the pandemic, the economic situation has now changed.
