Canada: Since arriving in Washington, D.C., Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has faced heavy criticism for Canada’s lack of a plan to meet NATO’s defense spending goal of 2% of GDP. U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson accused Canada of relying too much on American defense efforts. Currently, 23 of NATO’s 32 members meet or exceed the 2% target, while Canada spends 1.37%, ranking it fifth from the bottom. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg emphasized that 2% should be the minimum, not the maximum, for defense spending.
