New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday sought response of the Centre government and the Election Commission of India on a PIL seeking voting rights to non-resident Indians (NRIs) during elections in the country.
A bench of Chief Justice N V Ramana and Justices J K Maheshwari and Hima Kohli took note of a PIL filed by the Kerala Overseas Association seeking voting rights to NRIs.
The apex court of India issued notice on this and ordered to attach the PIL with the earlier petitions on the matter.
Recently, the ECI had told the Indian government to permit Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) to cast their votes through postal ballots.
