According to the information received, a few days ago, a dozen senior Congress leaders reached the jail to meet Navjot Singh Sidhu. A senior leader, who returned from the meeting, said that due to his good conduct, he can be released on January 26. He has been in Patiala jail for the last six and a half months.
The Supreme Court had sentenced him to 1 year in jail.
Former Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu was sentenced to one year in jail by the Supreme Court in a 34-year-old road rage case. In 1988, an elderly man was killed after being hit by Sidhu’s punch in a road rage incident in Punjab.
In this case, the Supreme Court had earlier acquitted Sidhu of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and imposed a fine of Rs 1,000, but while hearing the review petition in this case, the apex court had now sentenced Sidhu to one year in jail.
After Sidhu’s release, the Congress high command can also hand him a big responsibility. Priyanka Gandhi has written a letter to him recently.
At present, Punjab is commanded by Amarinder Singh Raja Warring. After the debacle in the elections, the Congress has not yet been able to stabilize, while the BJP is engaged in breaking their senior leaders.
