Chandigarh: After the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) senior leader Bibi Jagir Kaur has announced to contest the election of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president poll, the Akali Dal leadership asked her to toe the party line.
The SAD has intensified efforts to convince Bibi Jagir Kaur, but she is adamant on her decision.
Senior Akali Dal leaders including Daljit Singh Cheema and Surjit Singh Rakhra reached Kapurthala yesterday and held a meeting with Kaur.
They urged Bibi to reconsider her decision and asked her to toe with the party line.
Confirming the meeting, Rakhra said that Bibi Jagir Kaur has assured to consider their suggestion.
On the contrary former SGPC president Bibi Jagir Kaur said she stood by her stand. She said she had made it clear to senior party leaders that she is firm on her stand that she told to the SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal a few days back.
She had announced to contest the election of SGPC president opposing the envelope culture of the Shiromani Akali Dal. If she stick to her stand, there is a possibility of factionalism in the Akali Dal.
The Badals are facing a direct challenge after a very long time in the SGPC elections. So far, no one has announced to contest the presidential election separately in these elections.
