Chandigarh: A discussion was held at The Kendriya Sri Guru Singh Sabha in Sector-28, Chandigarh to check the deteriorating law and order situation in Punjab and the spread of drugs.
The function was presided over by senior advocate Rajwinder Singh Bains, president of ‘Main Punjabi Manch’ Punjab and former Aam Aadmi Party MP Dr Dharamveer Gandhi.
During the function, Gandhi said that Punjab is constantly being defamed in the name of drugs, while the prevalence of drugs in southern countries and southern states of India is more than Punjab.
Dr. Gandhi said that in order to eradicate synthetic drugs from Punjab, sale of traditional drugs opium and poppy should be allowed, so that the youth of Punjab can be taken out of the quagmire of synthetic drugs. Opium is legally permitted in the US, Canada, Belgium, the Netherlands and other European countries, he said. There, people are producing opium themselves as per legal rules.
On the same lines, in Punjab, the government should amend the NDPS Act to allow opium and poppy husk as per law.
On this occasion, Advocate Bains and other intellectuals condemned the forcible removal of the ongoing agitation outside the liquor factory in Zira.
He said the liquor factory was polluting the water of several nearby villages, but the government, instead of conducting an inquiry, had forcibly picked up the agitating farmers. Similarly, demolition drive in Latifpura of Jalandhar was also condemned.
