Bengaluru: The anti-corruption wing of the Lokayukta has arrested, a 2008 batch Karnataka Administrative Services officer and son of BJP MLA Madal Virupakshappa, while accepting Rs 40 lakh bribe. The team later recovered around Rs 6 crore from MLA’s house on Friday.

The anti-corruption wing of the Lokayukta raided the house of Prashant Madal, son of BJP MLA Madal Virupakshappa, and found a huge pile of cash.

Madal Virupakshappa is the chairman of state-owned Karnataka Soap and Detergents Limited (KSDL). It manufactures the famous Mysore Sandal soap. His son is the chief accountant with the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB).

On Thursday, lokayukta officials arrested BJP MLA’s son while accepting a bribe of Rs 40 lakh. According to Lokayukta sources, Prashanth Kumar was arrested from his father’s Bengaluru office, Karnataka Soap and Detergent Limited (KSDL), where he was accepting the bribe.

According to Lokayukta police, Prashant had demanded Rs 80 lakh as bribe. Prashant’s father is an MLA from Channagiri in Davangere district of Karnataka and chairman of KSDL.

Sources said that three bags of cash have been recovered from Prashant. Prashant was caught accepting a bribe from a contractor for a deal to procure raw materials required to make soaps and other detergents. It is said that he had allegedly demanded Rs 80 lakh, which the contractor had complained to the Lokayukta a week ago, after which a plan was made to catch Prashant red-handed.

A senior Lokayukta official said, “The money was received from KSDL Chairman Maadal Virupakshappa for the purchase of raw materials. The chairman of KSDL and the accused who received the money are father and son.”
