Increase in Dumpster Fires Prompts Safety Reminder from White Rock Fire Rescue
White Rock Fire Rescue (WRFR) is advising residents, business owners, and property managers to exercise caution following an increase in dumpster fires throughout the community.
“Dumpster fires can present a risk of structural extension when placed too close to buildings, vehicles, or overhangs,” said Fire Chief Brad Davie. “We are reminding the public to take proactive steps to secure dumpsters and other outdoor waste containers to help protect their property and reduce fire risk.”
White Rock Fire Rescue recommends the following actions to help prevent dumpster fires and reduce the risk of fire spread:
- Keep dumpster lids closed and locked.
- Place dumpsters at least 10 feet away from buildings, vegetation, and other combustible materials.
- Do not place dumpsters directly under windows, doors, or other building openings.
- Do not block fire lane access to dumpsters and avoid parking vehicles in their way.
- Store dumpsters in well-lit areas.
- Do not place hazardous materials in dumpsters, as they can release toxic substances if ignited.
- Avoid discarding cigarettes or smoking materials in dumpsters.
