BC premier David Eby Tuesday called snap elections in the province on October 24. The move was expected as the premier had called a press conference.

The Municipalities are going for the elections on October 17. Vancouver mayor Ken Sim on Monday urged Eby not to call the snap elections as the provincial elections can distract people from the local issues. 

Eby who became the premier for the first time in 2022 and then in 2024,  saw his career's lowest ranking recently due to mounting debt on the province. The BC NDP won a narrow majority in 2022 to form the government.

Out of the total 93 seats, BC NDP has 47 seats while the opposition BC Conservatives won 44 seats in the legislative. Green party managed to win two seats. 

The timing of calling the elections is considered very important as the opposition Conservative party's infighting may have led to the premier to find a chance to better his position in the legislative assembly.

People, although gave mix reactions to Eby's decision. 

The callers, at Sher-e-Punjab Radio AM 600's popular show-The Harjeet Gill Show, said that this was not the right time to call the elections as the province is grappling with other issues which include the financial issues and unemployment issues.
