Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday for talks focused on bilateral relations and global affairs, including an appeal from India for an end to the war in Ukraine.

The bilateral meeting took place on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in the Kyrgyz capital. During the discussions, Modi emphasized India’s support for all peaceful resolution efforts and formally invited Putin to attend the upcoming BRICS summit set for September in New Delhi.

Following the session, the two leaders traveled together in the same vehicle to attend the opening ceremony of the 6th World Nomad Games at the Bishkek Arena.

Modi also held separate talks with other international leaders present at the summit, including Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. The two-day SCO summit has drawn top officials from its 10 member states, including India, Russia, China, Pakistan, and Iran.

The meeting follows previous statements of support from Moscow regarding India's foreign policy. Speaking in Saint Petersburg in June, Putin rejected suggestions of strain in Russia-India ties, describing India as a reliable partner and dismissing outside pressure on bilateral relations as counterproductive.
