Officers on bikes stop impaired driver as part of two-wheeled patrols during “Go By Bike Week”
Burnaby RCMP Traffic Services officers taking part in bike patrols during Go By Bike Week ended up stopping an impaired driver.
On May 31, just after 3:30 PM, the officers were patrolling in southwest Burnaby when a vehicle was observed failing to stop for a stop sign. An officer flagged the vehicle down, which was found to have a male driver behind the wheel and a young child in the back seat. The officer noted signs of suspected impairment and requested a breath sample. As a result of the breath sample, the driver received an immediate roadside driving prohibition for three days, along with a three-day vehicle impound and other violation tickets.
“This is just one example of a potentially dangerous situation averted by the work our officers do on a daily basis – in this case, the officers just happened to have swapped their patrol vehicles for bikes,” said Burnaby RCMP Traffic Services Sgt. Gary Johal. “During this same week, our officers also issued violation tickets for other offences including excessive speeding.”
The Traffic Services team participated in Go By Bike Week (formerly known as Bike to Work Week) from May 30 to June 5th, in partnership with the City of Burnaby. Officers brought their bikes to community events, patrolled parks and trails, visited schools, and provided education and enforcement related to the proper use of e-scooters and e-bikes in the city.
