Richmond RCMP is warning the public about a growing fraud trend targeting individuals selling high-value items through online marketplaces. Investigators have received several reports in which suspects used distraction techniques and sleight of hand tactics to obtain luxury watches and collectible items while providing envelopes containing worthless paper instead of legitimate payment.

Since November 2025, Richmond RCMP has investigated multiple incidents involving transactions arranged through online marketplaces. In each case, the exchange took place in a public setting and victims believed they were receiving thousands of dollars in cash. It was only after the transaction was completed that they discovered the envelopes contained a small amount of genuine currency placed on top of paper cut to resemble stacks of bills.

To date, the total reported loss exceeds $22,000. Investigators have also identified similar incidents in other Lower Mainland jurisdictions, suggesting this may be part of a broader regional trend.

“These suspects are skilled at creating a false sense of security during a transaction and rely on victims being distracted at a critical moment,” says Cpl. Melissa Lui of the Richmond RCMP. “We encourage anyone selling high-value items online to exercise caution, carefully verify payment before handing over their property, and arrange transactions at a police detachment Exchange Zone whenever possible.”
