Canadian Army Reorganizes to Strengthen Canada’s Defence
As part of its modernization efforts, the Canadian Army has adopted a new mission-based structure to strengthen Canada's defence, improve readiness, and better support operations at home and abroad.
Formally recognized last month, this restructuring gives each formation a clear mission and helps the Army remain ready, adaptable, and equipped for the security challenges .
The new structure includes four primary formations 1st Canadian Division in Edmonton, 2nd Canadian Division in Montréal, Canadian Army Support Division in Kingston, and Canadian Army Doctrine and Training Centre in Kingston.
This approach allows formations to concentrate their expertise and resources on clearly defined responsibilities. It is part of several ongoing modernization initiatives that contribute to the creation of a modern Army that is ready and resilient, equipped and able to operate seamlessly across diverse environments.
“This new structure reflects the Canadian Army’s role as both an engine for growth across the Canadian Armed Forces and an action arm of Canada’s Defence Investment Strategy. By aligning our formations around their core responsibilities, we are strengthening our ability to generate forces, integrate capabilities, and convert investment into operational readiness and tangible results. The outcome is a more agile and effective Army, better able to contribute to the joint and all-arms defence of Canada, safeguard Canadian sovereignty, and deliver credible land power at home and abroad," said Lieutenant-General Michael Wright, Commander Canadian Army.
