The City of Surrey has broken ground on Acorn Park in South Newton, marking the start of construction on the first of three new neighbourhood parks representing a $7.9-million investment in new community green spaces. The new parks, located in Newton and Guildford, will create accessible outdoor spaces where residents can relax, play, gather and enjoy nature closer to home.

 "As Surrey continues to grow, we need to make sure our parks and public spaces grow with it,” Mayor Brenda Locke said. “Investing in neighbourhood parks is an important part of creating healthy, livable communities and ensuring residents have access to quality public spaces in every part of our city.”

 Acorn Park is a new 3.9-acre (1.6-hectare) neighbourhood space at 58A Avenue and 142 Street. The $2.5-million project is being delivered in two phases, with open space, multi-use pathways and a pilot dog off-leash area opening by the end of 2026. A playground, multi-sport court and gathering spaces will follow in 2027.

 Abbey Ridge Park is a 5.2-acre (2.1-hectare) park in East Fraser Heights that will include a playground, fitness area, half basketball court, dog off-leash area, walking trails and gathering areas. Construction for this $2.6 million project is expected to begin this fall, with the first phase to open by the end of the year and remaining amenities available in 2027.

 Woodward Hill Neighbourhood Park in South Newton is a new 4.7-acre (1.9-hectare) park beside the elementary school that will begin construction later this fall and open by fall 2027. The $2.8-million project will include a basketball court, nature-inspired playground, outdoor fitness equipment, accessible pathways and shared seating and picnic areas. A defining feature will be the preservation of many mature trees, giving the park shade and a welcoming, established feel from the day it opens.
