With the summer boating season underway, Richmond RCMP  is reminding boaters to make safety their top priority before heading out on local waterways.

Richmond is surrounded by waterways, including the Fraser River, where conditions can change quickly. Having the right safety equipment on board and knowing the rules can help prevent emergencies and keep everyone safe.

To promote safe and responsible boating, Richmond RCMP will be conducting a boating safety education and compliance initiative on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at the McDonald Beach Boat Launch in Richmond. Officers will be speaking with boaters about safe boating practices and ensuring they have the required safety equipment and documentation before launching.

"Boating is a great way to enjoy the summer, but safety needs to come first. We encourage everyone to take a few minutes before heading out to make sure they have the proper equipment, including a lifejacket for every person on board. Operators should also remember that alcohol and drugs can impair judgment, reaction time, and decision-making on the water, just as they do on the road.

Being prepared can make all the difference when an emergency happens," says Staff Sergeant Major Ross Lundie, NCO i/c of the Richmond RCMP Boat Patrol Unit.
