Tensions remain high in New Delhi after police beat up protesting students

Tensions remain high in India’s capital following violent clashes between police and protesters demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET-UG 2026 examination paper leak.

Demonstrators organized by the youth movement Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) gathered by the thousands in central Delhi on Monday for a march toward Parliament. Delhi Police used baton charges and tear gas to halt the crowds, leading to injuries among both officers and protesters, as well as more than 100 detentions.

Despite a formal meeting between CJP representatives and Union Minister J.P. Nadda — the first direct talks since sit-in demonstrations began on June 20 — movement leaders insisted their protests will continue until their demands are fulfilled. During the talks, CJP representatives Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka submitted a memorandum demanding Pradhan’s dismissal. While the government urged an end to the sit-in and assured a review of the demands, protest leaders rejected calling off the demonstration.

Meanwhile, prominent social activist Sonam Wangchuk entered the 24th day of his hunger strike Tuesday from a hospital bed. Wangchuk declared his fast will persist until youth leaders are allowed to meet with Members of Parliament inside the legislature or until MPs visit him at the hospital.

Separately, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, who was detained by police, ended his hunger strike unto death on Monday. The opposition Congress party also held demonstrations outside the Prime Minister's residence, calling for his resignation.

Security forces remain heavily deployed across Jantar Mantar and surrounding areas as authorities maintain heightened vigilance.
