West Kelowna RCMP seeking assistance to identify motorcycle rider
The West Kelowna RCMP is requesting the public's assistance in identifying the operator of a motorcycle involved in a dangerous driving incident on Highway 97.
On July 2, at approximately 5:06 p.m., West Kelowna RCMP officers were travelling southbound on Highway 97 near Grizzly Road when they observed a sport motorcycle performing dangerous stunts, including riding on one wheel ("catwalking") in the middle of the highway.
Officers observed the motorcycle travel alongside their police vehicle and were able to capture video footage on a body-worn camera. The motorcycle is described as a white sport motorcycle being operated by a Caucasian male wearing a white helmet.
Police activated their emergency equipment and signalled the rider to pull over. The rider initially appeared as though he was going to stop; however, he then accelerated away at a high rate of speed and continued southbound on Highway 97.
For public safety reasons, no pursuit was initiated, and officers discontinued their attempt to stop the motorcycle.
"Choosing to accelerate away from police at a high rate of speed is reckless and unacceptable. While officers discontinued their attempt to stop the motorcycle in the interest of public safety, we remain committed to identifying the rider. We encourage anyone with information to come forward and assist investigators," Constable Ash Puri, West Kelowna Media Resource Officer.
The West Kelowna RCMP is now seeking the public's assistance in identifying the rider.
