The City of Penticton is taking a data-driven approach to attracting expanded air service at Penticton Airport (YYF), using strong community feedback to build a compelling business case for airlines.

Recent surveys of residents, travellers and businesses reveal overwhelming support for increased flights, particularly to Vancouver and Calgary. The City gathered 3,757 responses, including nearly 3,500 travellers and 257 businesses representing more than 24,000 regional employees.

“These results send a clear message,” said Blake Laven, general manager of Development Services. “People in Penticton and across the South Okanagan want more air service to and from Penticton Airport, and we’re taking that case directly to airlines.”

The City is now using this data to proactively engage commercial carriers to expand service. To date, the City has met with Air Canada and WestJet and has initiated discussions with Porter Airlines.

“Air Canada and WestJet both recognize the potential for increased service to Penticton, and we’re encouraged by conversations as they develop schedules for October 2026 to May 2027,” added Laven.

While Penticton Airport is owned and operated by the Federal government via Transport Canada, the City plays an active role in promoting and supporting the airport’s growth. Through its Economic Development function, the City led this research initiative to strengthen its case for enhanced passenger service and to better understand travel patterns in the region.

The survey findings show that YYF travellers are primarily flying for leisure purposes, accounting for 82 per cent of trips, while business travel makes up 14 per cent and rotational work travel four per cent.

The most requested domestic location is Vancouver (20 per cent), followed by Calgary (14 per cent). Community respondents also identified demand for additional service to Edmonton, Toronto and Victoria. Top international and transborder destinations include Mexico, the United Kingdom, Italy, Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

Local businesses highlighted the critical role air connectivity plays in economic success. Among business respondents, 84 per cent said air travel is very or critically important to their operations, with approximately 5,800 business trips originating from YYF in the past year.

Many indicated that limited flight schedules and reduced service levels have pushed travellers to use other airports, particularly Kelowna, highlighting an opportunity to bring these trips back to Penticton.

Staff also continue to work with WestJet and Visit Penticton on marketing efforts to support the direct Vancouver route, which launches this week and is currently confirmed through October.

“YYF is a convenient, accessible option for direct flights to Vancouver and Calgary and an excellent starting point for longer journeys,” added Laven. “We encourage residents and visitors to think Penticton first when booking their flights.”

The study also highlights the broader value of Penticton Airport, which supports more than 200 jobs, contributes to the regional economy, and serves as a hub for emergency response and disaster relief.
Known for its ease of use, YYF offers affordable parking and is located within a 10-minute drive of most areas in the city.
