Kitsilano Pool targeting mid-June opening as City advances planning for its future

The City of Vancouver and Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation are preparing Kitsilano Pool for the upcoming summer season, with a targeted mid-June opening following the completion of seasonal maintenance and final inspections.
Pre-season work includes assessing the pool’s condition and completing necessary repairs to its pipes and basin. Once repairs are complete, the pool will be filled, water treated and heated, followed by an annual inspection by the health authority prior to opening.
Kitsilano Pool has reached the end of its functional life with several deteriorating components and a history of storm-related damage, which adds complexity to its opening each season.

Planning for the future of Kitsilano Pool

Following a feasibility study and public engagement, three potential options for the future of Kitsilano Pool were developed and shared with City Council and the Park Board. The study reviewed technical, environmental and financial factors, and engagement identified strong community interest in preserving the pool’s length and character.

Feasibility options include, Protect the existing facility (approximately 15 year lifespan, ~$40M), Renovate the existing facility (approximately 30 year lifespan, ~$90M), Replace with a new facility outside the floodplain (approximately 75 year lifespan, ~$230–$300M, depending on potential enhancements)

Each option involves different trade-offs related to cost, longevity, climate resilience, service continuity, and alignment with broader citywide infrastructure priorities.

Staff will look to a final decision from the Park Board on priority setting and Council on overall funding as part of the 2027-2030 Capital Plan approval process later this spring prior to advancing this work further.
