Weather alert in Punjab, gusty winds, thunderstorms predicted

India’s weather office has issued a yellow alert for the Chandigarh tricity region, warning of unsettled conditions in the coming days after a powerful storm over the weekend caused widespread disruption.

According to the India Meteorological Department, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, rain and gusty winds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour are predicted  on Tuesday and Wednesday across Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula.

The alert follows a severe storm on Sunday that uprooted trees and damaged power lines across the region. In Mohali, electricity outages lasted up to nine hours on Monday. Although an orange alert had been issued for that day, authorities reported no major additional damage.

Forecasters say conditions are expected to improve later in the week, with dry weather likely from Thursday through Saturday. However, another shift in weather patterns could occur by Sunday.

The recent rainfall has provided relief from intense heat in the region. Chandigarh recorded a maximum temperature of 31.7°C on Monday, about 5.8 degrees below normal.

Since March 1, the city has received 100.6 millimetres of rain — more than double the seasonal average. During Sunday’s storm alone, 24.5 millimetres of rainfall was recorded in Chandigarh, the highest in Punjab.

Light to moderate rain was also reported in several parts of the state, contributing to a noticeable drop in temperatures.
