Kelowna RCMP urges residents to be vigilant about fraud
Kelowna RCMP is urging residents to remain vigilant after police received an uptick in fraud reports, particularly involving impersonation-based scams.
Investigators continue to see a high volume of scams where fraudsters pose as public officials or trusted institutions. These scams often rely on fear and a sense of urgency, pressuring victims into transferring money or handing over cash. Police are also seeing computer‑related fraud, where scammers initiate contact after a victim’s computer has been compromised by viruses or malware.
Impersonation scams on the rise
Police are continuing to investigate cases involving callers who claim to represent government agencies, law enforcement, financial institutions, courthouses, or even loved ones. In many cases, scammers use “spoofed” phone numbers, making calls appear legitimate.
The caller or suspect will often apply pressure or issue threats, warning that serious consequences will occur unless the victim urgently provides cash or completes an online funds transfer.
