B.C. attorney general marks Asian Heritage Month, calls for action against racism
Niki Sharma is recognizing Asian Heritage Month with a message celebrating the contributions of Asian communities across British Columbia while urging continued efforts to confront racism and discrimination.
In a statement released Thursday, Sharma said May is a time to honour the diverse cultures, histories and achievements of people of Asian descent, who have been part of the province since its earliest days.
She said Asian communities have played a key role in shaping British Columbia’s economic, social and cultural foundations, contributing across sectors including arts, science, business and public life.
Sharma also acknowledged that racism and hate continue to affect many Asian communities, sometimes in ways that go unreported, causing harm and undermining people’s sense of safety and belonging.
She said the province is committed to ensuring the justice system responds to hate-motivated incidents, including efforts to improve reporting and strengthen partnerships with community organizations.
Sharma encouraged residents to use Asian Heritage Month as an opportunity to learn more about the histories and experiences of Asian communities and to stand against racism in all its forms.
Asian Heritage Month is marked each May across Canada to celebrate the achievements and contributions of Canadians of Asian descent.
