Council has approved an $11.6-million contract to install new water mains and upgrade 24 Avenue in South Surrey to support future housing in the area. 

“As Surrey continues to grow, it’s essential that we invest in the infrastructure needed to deliver more homes and support complete communities in our city,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “These upgrades will ease pressure on our roads and provide reliable water services for current and future residents.” 

The project includes two kilometres of new water mains along 24 Avenue (166 Street to 172 Street) and 172 Street (24 Avenue to 20 Avenue), serving Grandview Heights’ neighbourhoods including Darts Hill and Redwood Heights.  

To minimise disruptions, the contract also includes coordinated upgrades along 24 Avenue to improve safety and traffic flow:

Widening from two to four lanes, with pedestrian and cycling paths, between the 16500 Block and 168 Street 

Widening from two to three lanes, with the additional lane, as well as pedestrian and cycling paths, on north side, between 168 Street and 172 Street 

The work is part of a broader effort to accelerate housing supply and build critical infrastructure, supported in part through the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s Housing Accelerator Fund. 

Construction is expected to start in July and be completed by summer 2027.
