City of Surrey bans open burning starting May 1

As summer approaches, Surrey Fire Services is reminding residents and visitors that there is no burning of any solid fuels at any time in Surrey unless the fire is compliant with the City’s bylaw and a burning permit has been issued.  As of May 1, all existing permits expire and all forms of open burning are banned within city limits. This includes backyard fires and beach fires.

Warmer temperatures and drier conditions significantly increase the risk of brush fires and unwanted smoke across the city. Everyone has a role to play in helping prevent accidental fires and keeping Surrey safe during the dry season.

What the City is doing

The City is providing additional signage in key areas to help keep the public informed, including:

  • Current fire danger ratings
  • Locations where fires have started due to improperly discarded smoking materials
  • Clear reminders that beach fires are not allowed

These measures are designed to raise awareness and reduce the risk of fire as more people spend time outdoors.

What you need to know

  • Open burning is not permitted anywhere in Surrey, including private property and beaches.
  • If an open burn occurs, Fire Service crews will attend and extinguish it.
  • Property owners may be responsible for fees related to fire response.

What is allowed

While open burning is banned, residents can still use:

  • Natural gas, propane or charcoal briquette appliances
  • Devices must be ULC/CSA approved and designed for their intended fuel

Charcoal briquettes are permitted on private property. However, their use may be restricted in City parks and on City beaches when the fire danger rating is high or extreme.
